Claudja Barry

Изображение

Born 1952 in Jamaica, Claudja's parents left and moved to Canada while she was still a young child. Raised in Toronto Claudja was exposed to a variety of musical influences from an early age. She was taken with singing and began taking vocal lessons in hopes of a career in music. By the age of 15 she had mastered the art of singing and had developed her voice to an outstanding level, so unique was her talent that she easily won an audtion and spot on a local television show.

By her late teens Claudja was headlining her own show and after graduation she quickly fled to New York in search of stardom. While in New York Claudja landed roles in two shows, "Hair" and "Catch My Soul." The latter, a touring company production, brought her to Europe. While in Europe she began doing session work as a background vocalist. The session work led to a chance meeting with producer Frank Farina.

Farina had just scored a european hit with 1975's "Baby Do You Wanna Bump?" under the pseudonym "Boney M" (Boney: Hero of an Australian TV-Series). Due to the success, there was a demand for live appearances of Boney M. Farian and agent Katja Wolf hired 4 girls and 1 guy. Maizie Williams, Sheila Bonnick, a girl named Nathalie, Claudja Barry and the male dancer Mike. This line-up did only dancing, lip synching and press appearances. After a brief tour Claudja Barry was replaced by Liz Mitchell in 1976.

During her brief role with Boney M Claudja met a handsome young record producer Jorgen Korduletsch. Korduletsch would play a significant role in her professional life as producer/writer/manager, and later in her personal life as her husband. Korduletsch was the owner of an up and coming label, Lollipop Records. He convinced Barry that she should record with him and signed her immediately to a contract. They cut five sides that Korduletsch co-wrote with his partner/arranger Jorg Evers.

The tracks were quickly licensed by Salsoul Records and sent, along with Tom Moulton, back to the studio for remixing. The result was Barry's 1977 debut album "Sweet Dynamite." The album was a major hit in clubs, but all of the material holds up nicely away from the dance floor. None of the songs come across as mechanical or insincere, and Barry is as soulful on the haunting, European-flavored "Love For The Sake Of Love" as she is on the exuberant "Why Must A Girl Like Me" and the gritty title song, which has as much to do with soul and funk as it does with Euro-disco. Though Barry's vocals are the album's main focus, she lays out on "Live A Little Bit," an infectious instrumental that successfully fuses Euro-disco with African pop and reggae. Thanks to 12" singles, the title track and "Dance, Dance, Dance" were top ten club smashes and made the album an international hit and an essential disco classic. But this was only the start of what was to become a long and fruitful career for Claudja and Jorgen.

Her first album was an incredibly tough act to follow, so tough that her sophomore effort would have been disappointing if it were anything less than a gem. Because "Claudja," the singer's second album, was more diverse many deemed it less successful....not true. Assembling all the same ingredients from her first release Barry/Korduletsch decide to broaden her appeal and showcase her versatility. The results are confusing to those that viewed C.B. as strictly a "disco singer." Her remake of the Gladys Knight & the Pips classic "Every Beat Of My Heart" is as soulful as the original and her rockin' version of the H-D-H Motown smoker "Take Me In Your Arms," also a 1975 hit for the Dobbie Brothers, leaves theirs in the dust! The album's breakout club hits were "Dancin' Fever" and "Johnny Johnny Please Come Home." Thanks to a later remix and release "Take It Easy" became a hit in 1988 ten years after the albums release. This album is also a disco essential but her most commercial success had yet to come.

By 1979 Claudja had become a recognizable club name. For whatever reasons Jorgen had decided not to license her next sessions to Salsoul Records but to release them on his own Lollipop Records through a Canadian distribution deal. The deal had already brought another of his proteges, Ronnie Jones to the club scene via Canada (Jones and Barry had cut a 1977 12" single of "It Takes Two" for his debut release). Her 1979 sessions were released as "I Wanna Be Loved By You." The first single, the title track remake of the Marilyn Monroe classic, created few waves. The second 12" caught on like wild fire. "Boogie Woogie Dancin' Shoes" was fast becoming an import hit when Chrysalis Records snatched up the U.S. rights for it. When Chrysalis bought the rights they decided against including "I Wanna Be Loved By You" as well as "Down By The Water" and "Love Of The Hurtin' Kind." However for their release, retitled "Boogie Woogie Dancin' Shoes" they did include another track from those sessions not on the original album, "Forget About You."

The album is viewed as her most commercially successful thanks to the number one title track hit. The album did contain an interesting remake of the Staple Singers classic "Heavy Makes You Happy" but failed to produce any other hits. A second release of 1980 sessions for Chrysalis proved less favorable. "Feel The Fire" did produce the 12" single "You Make Me Feel The Fire" which did enjoy a fair amount of club play but tastes were changing and Claudja had yet to catch up with them. The album had a more rock oriented sound, possibly due to Chrysalis' trend at rock and punk releases, or the fact that "disco" seemed to be dying. The album does have it's danceable moments on Euro-disco items like "Stop, He's A Lover" and "One Night Queen." Things become more mechanical on "Wake Up And Make Love To Me," which is among the more forgettable songs on the album. Meanwhile, "Love Seemed So Easy Without You" is a pleasant R&B/pop ballad — not a gem, but a likable reminder that she is quite capable of singing ballads. "Feel The Fire" isn't perfect, but more often than not, it paints a favorable picture of Claudja, though not an essential album.

While disco was dying in 1981 Claudja was having difficulty securing an American label to release her recordings. Her next batch of sessions came out on the Canadian arm of Polydor Records. The 12" single of "Radio Action" provided a high energy boost to the gay club scene at a time when Hi-NRG music was becoming less and less. The album "Made In Hong Kong" produced the title track hit as well as the more moderately tempoed "Love Control." However it's success was impeded by the lack of an American release and was only programmed by the more astute import-buying D.J.'s. That year another duet with Lollipop mate Ronnie Jones was released on the American label Handshake Records. "The Two Of Us" remains one of my all-time favorites and is a C.B. high-energy classic.
1982 was the turn around year for dance music and Claudja was there poised for international success once again. It started slowly with a 12" single on Atlantic Records of "If I Do It To You" and "Up All Night." Club play was minimal, mostly based on her name. That summer the upstart label TSR Records took a chance and released "Work Me Over" backed wiith a remake of Little Peggy March's "I Will Follow Him." Once again Barry was back on top of the game securing another number one club hit. Oddly enough an album did NOT follow the success of this 12" single.

Her 1983 release on Personal records of "For Your Love" was yet another remake, this time Claudja was plundering the "rock vaults" for material by covering the Yardbird's hit. The release was profitable and forged a short-term alliance with Personal Records. Her tenure with Personal saw the cover of the Cerrone hit "Trippin' On The Moon" (which featured a censored-version picture from Claudja's German Playboy Magazine spread..no pun intended!), and two different 12" singles of "Born To Love" also from 1984. And the mini-album "No La De Da-Part 2" was there ever a part one?

Her next appearance was on the Bobby "O" green-vinyl 12" single "Whisper To A Scream." The 12" proved to be her biggest hit since "Work Me Over" in 1982. Around this time I had the first of several encounters with Claudja and Jorgen. In 1984, for the grand opening of Paradise (a behemoth gay club that was the sequel to Dugan's Bistro in Chicago) two weeks worth of entertainment was booked, Claudja was one of the outstanding crowd-pleasing acts to perform there. I was fortunate to meet her and catch her show.

By 1985 Barry was ready to spread her wings and attempt a career change of sorts. She landed a small role in the 1985 Mario Van Peebles movie "Rappin'." Her movie career ended before it ever began, thanks to this turkey of a movie.

Barry and Korduletsch had no problem changing with the times, but as the saying goes, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Barry was as popular among the late-1970's disco crowd as she was among dance-pop and Hi-NRG fans in the 1980's, and most of her support continued to come from dance clubs — unlike Madonna or Donna Summer, Barry was unable to make the transition from club diva to major pop star. Released in 1987, "I, Claudja" contains Barry's Hi-NRG club smash "Down And Counting," which is the only song on the LP that can truly be called a gem. Dance items like the 12" singles "Hot To The Touch" and "Can You Feel My HeartBeat" are competent and likable, but they don't pack the punch that "Down And Counting" does. Nor does Barry excel on "Dead Or Alive" (which was influenced by the dance-pop/Hi-NRG group Dead or Alive) or the Prince-like 12" single "Secret Affair," although both are decent. "I, Claudja" is only recommended to her diehard fans. The four 12" singles and one album released on Epic Records seems to have fulfilled her contract with the label.

Her next release was the earlier mentioned "Take It Easy" set of remixes for Hot Productions in 1988. As Hot Productions were gaining momentum her affiliation with the label was two-fold. First they began re-releasing her previous albums on compact disc and secondly she began releasing 12" singles on their various labels. Next up was a collaboration with S.I.N. on the electronica hit "Good Time" in 1990 for Hot Records.
A one-shot deal for RCA Records in 1991 brought "Love Is An Island" to the top of the club charts. The original 12" single was remixed and re-released on RCA and a bootleg 12" single on LOVE BOOT Records chocked full of dubs and remixes found it's way onto the scene. At this point came my second encounter with Claudja & Jorgen. That summer I attended the 1991 New Music Seminar in New York as a D.J. and columnist for Chicago Music Magazine. As part of the press entourage we had endless invitations to all the A-list parties and the first night there we attended a press party, upon hitting the dance floor we found ourselves dancing with Claudja & Jurgen, we wound up spending the entire evening club hopping and partying with them (really great people!). Over the next several days we kept running into them at various parties and function and she was always alot of fun to be around.
Her next several releases were for the Hot Records label, 1992's "Summer Of Love," "Can We Dance" with BKS, the 1994 General Base hit "Poison" featuring her stunning vocals and the 1995 Christmas album "Disco 'Round The Christmas Tree."

A 1996 12" single on Critique Records, "Ain't Gonna Miss You," seems to be her last known recording as a soloist. Jorgen became involved with the gospel group The Brower Brothers in 1997, producing their album "Call On God". Claudja is credited as part of the choir/chorus.

In 1999 Montell Jordan sampled the rhythm track from Barry's single "Love For the Sake of Love" for the hit titled "Get It On Tonite" (№ 4 on the Hot 100). In May 2006, Barry returned to the Billboard charts with "I Will Stand" released on Donna Jean Records. By July had reached the Top 10 of the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, peaking at #4 before the end of the summer. It received moderate dance radio format airplay. The long awaited album by the same name is due to be released sometime in 2007.
