Providence - Ever Sence The Dawn (1972, Threshold - 2008, Retro Disc Int, RDI 33045) Source: my CD collection ![]() Providence was a six-piece music group originally from Boise, Idaho, but later based out of Portland, Oregon, USA, circa 1971—1974. The style of the group was decidedly soft rock with dominant classical influences, particularly in contrapuntal instrumental interludes by their string trio and in broad vocal harmonies that followed strict rules of voice-leading. -----Their greatest accomplishment came when The Moody Blues, seeking to expand the roster of their fledgling label Threshold Records, signed Providence to a recording contract. They managed one release, Ever Sense the Dawn (1972), before parting ways. -----Live, Providence was an impressive unit that drew heavily on the combined power of Bob Barriatua's bass and Tim Tompkins' cello, the two instruments combining to create a rock edge that could be quite intense. Layered on top of that were Tom Tompkins' viola and Jim Cockey's violin. Andy Guzie's guitar work was often treated as a lyrical embellishment more than the blistering leads of his rock contemporaries of the period. Bartholomew Bishop's keyboards centered around piano, organ and harpsichord, rather than the Moog, ARP and other synthesizers then in common use among groups exploring a mixture of rock and classical influences. Because of their string trio, the group did not use the popular Mellotron (which the Moodies popularized in songs like "Nights in White Satin"), giving Providence a sound that was quite organic and more complex than that created by the Mellotron. Tracks: 01. Prelude: To Light Your Journey (0:48) 02. Mountain (4:00) 03. Lady (2:45) 04. Sketch Number Two (0:35) 05. The Stream (2:59) 06. If We Were Wise (4:00) 07. Fantasy Fugue (3:00) 08. Behold: A Solar Sonnet (3:59) Line-up: - Bob Barriatua / bass, vocals - Bart Bishop / organ, keyboards, vocals - Jim Cockney / violin, vocals - Jim Corkey / violin, glockenspiel, vocals - Andy Guzie / guitar, vocals - Tom Tompkins / percussion, violin, cello, viola Links:

The Collectors – s/t & Grass and Wild Strawberries (1967-68) Source: русский бутлег ![]() The Virgin Encyclopedia of Sixties Music: The Collectors were formed in Vancouver, Canada in 1961 and originally known as the C-Fun Classics and released many local records. They adopted the name C-FUN Classics when they gigged to promote local Vancouver, BC radio station CFUN-AM. The group were featured as the house band on 'Let's Go', a weekly TV show. In 1965, they released two singles as the Canadian Classics -- 'Til I Met You' (Jaguar 2002A) and 'I Don't Know' (Valiant 723). The band reinvented themselves as The Collectors in 1966 with the line-up as follows : --- Howie Vickers - Lead Vocals --- Bill Henderson - Lead Guitar, Lead Vocals & Keyboards --- Claire Lawrence - Saxophone, Flute, Keyboards, Harmonica & Vocals --- Glenn Miller - Bass and Vocals --- Ross Turney - Drums With former horn player Howie Vickers handling the lead vocals, they cut 'Eyes' and 'Don't Feel Bad' -- both of which later appeared on the History of Vancouver Rock and Roll, Volume 4 (VRCA 004; 1991). 'Eyes' -- a fine folk tune seasoned with tasty guitar and just a dash of psychedelia -- is easily the better track. 'Don't Feel Bad' has a vague 'On Broadway' feel. More elaborately produced, it also seems a less genuine effort. In 1967, The Collectors released the Vancouver smash hit single 'Looking at a Baby' (New Syndrome 16, 1967, subsequently reissued on the History of Vancouver Rock, Volume 3 VRCA 001, 1983) along with two other 45s - 'Fisherwoman' and 'Fat Bird'. The Collectors were drawn towards US west coast venues where they established a positive reputation for their complex arrangements, soaring harmonies and extended improvisations. Dave Hassinger was the mutual producer of both The Electric Prunes and The Collectors. Having just participated in the recording of The Collectors' epic 'What Love (Suite)', an entire side of their first Warners album, The Collectors immediately came to mind to Hassinger, who also "owned" the name The Electric Prunes. But although ready and willing to be session performers, The Collectors had already established themselves as Canada's hottest group with their original material and didn't really want to divert from their own artistic awesomeness. So, after the recording of 'Mass in F Minor', the Prunes were reformed with a completely new line-up to record 'Release of an Oath' with David Axelrod. After, The Collectors collaborated with George Ryga and released the 'Grass and Wild Strawberries' LP which was based on Ryga's stage play of the same name. During this period, The Collectors also provided the soundtrack music to three Canadian based films - Don't Let the Angels Fall (1968) along with David Hassinger, Canada the Land / Canada, pays vaste (1969) and The Land (1969). Although their imaginative use of of time signatures and woodwind garnered critical plaudits, this was not transferred into sales, and the Collectors' career ebbed with two non-album singles. The departure of Howie Vickers in 1969 prompted an internal rethink and the remaining quartet abandoned the name and emerged as Chilliwack in 1971 with Bill Henderson taking over lead vocals. Tracks: 1. What Is love (3:45) 2. She (Will Of The Wisp) (3:45) 3. Howard Christian’s Older (5:10) 4. Lydia Purple (2:45) 5. One Act Play (3:40) 6. What Love (19:15) + 07. Prelude (4:51) 08. Shampoo - Vol.1 (1972, Poorhouse) ![]() Asbjornsen: Smets and Bauwer had previously played in the pop-rock formation Pebbles, while Chitschenko came from the jazz-oriented Mad Curry. All tracks on the Shampoo album were composed by Mets, Chitschenko and Cel De Cauwer. The album has some historical interest due to its unusual mixture of harmony pop (a la The Beatles and the first Argent album) and brassy jazz-rock (similar to Chicago and Colosseum). Interestingly, some very short fragments of the album predated the chamber rock of Univers Zero, indicating that their unique vision still had some roots in the general Belgian rock scene of the time. Shampoo's curious mixture fits in well in the jigsaw of Belgian rock between Wallace Collection, Waterloo, Placebo, Arkham and Pazop. Some years later this scene developed into great bands such as Abraxis, Cos and, most importantly, Univers Zero. Tracks: 1. Brother 2. Keep The Day Cool 3. Some Reason 4. Summer 5. Hot Dog 6. Hurry Up 7. My Sweet Honeybee Line-up: Luc Smets - organ, piano, vocals Yves De Vrient - guitar François Maes - sax Giorgio Chitschenko - sax Rudy Pinlée - bass Cel De Bauwer - drums Featuring - sax, trumpet, organ, bass, drums and vocals Для просмотра этого блока необходима регистрация 220 Mb – FLAC (separate) +CUE+LOG-(NO SCANS) |

GÖSTA BERLINGS SAGA - Tid är Ljud (2006, Record Heaven / Transubstans) ![]() erik neuteboom: What a beautiful name for a progrock band in which two members are mentioned as playing the unsurpassed Mellotron, unfortunately only in two songs and not really omnipresent. The focus is on the Fender Rhoed electric piano, caressing our ears whith its very distinctive sound in most of the tracks. A strong point in Gosta Berlings Saga their music is the interplay between the guitar and keyboards but I am also impressed by the subtle shifting moods and creative musical ideas. This makes listening to this Swedish progrock band to a special experience because it sounds quite orignal with jazzy undertones and a tasteful colouring by instruments like the flute, slide-guitar, violin, some spectacular synthesizer work and a few Mellotron waves. If you like instrumental prog with an adventurous touch and the accent on melodies and harmony, this is a fine album to check out. My rating: 3,5 stars. Tracks: 1. Helgamarktz (5:10) 2. Syrenernas sång (8:14) 3. Aniarasviten (8:23) 4. Ljud från stan (8:04) 5. Tog du med dig naturen? (9:58) 6. Knölsvanen (7:15) 7. Svarta hål och elljusspår (8:20) Line-up: David Lundberg - Fender Rhodes, synthesizer, Mellotron Alexander Skepp - drums, percussion, Mellotron, Solina Matthias Danielsson - acoustic & electric guitars, finger cymbals Gabriel Hermansson - bass Для просмотра этого блока необходима регистрация 359 Mb – FLAC (separate) +CUE+LOG+SCANS |

Royal Servants - We (1970, Garden of Delights, 1999)
![]() ![]() Стиль: prog-rock, psych-pop, krautrock Немецкая группа, образованная в 1964 г., начинала с исполнения коверов на песни Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kinks, Searchers and Beach Boys.

Beat Of The Earth – s/t (1967, Radish - 2004, Radioactive Records) ![]() Radioactive: Phil Pearlman, whose Relatively Clean Rivers album (RRLP020) has received universal acclaim, assembled Beat Of The Earth in 1967 with this, their first, eponymous album, appearing on the Radish label (AS0001) in the same year. BOTE is often compared with their illustrious East coast counterparts, The Velvet Underground, an apt comparison given the Velvets penchant for long, unstructured jams using a myriad assortment of acoustic and electronic instruments. This is the earliest incarnation of the band, and the one that is most familiar to collectors fortunate enough to own a copy of this incredibly rare album. The album consists of a single track per side, and this, the bands recording debut, is considered an unusual and singular item of significance from the California 60s alternative rock scene. Although guitarist Pearlman managed to keep Beat Of The Earth together for much of the remainder of the 60s, it is fair to say that no more proper recordings were made, although Pearlman continued to add to his personal collection of studio recordings, drafting in new musicians for impromptu after-hours recording sessions arranged at short notice. Another fascinating psych album from a true musical innovator. Tracks: 1. Beat of the Earth Pt.1 2.
