Orion's Beethoven formed in Argentina in the late 60's, but it took them over four years to release their debut album. 'Superangel' eventually came out in 1973, and was a good progressive effort, influenced in parts by The Nice and ELP with the inclusion of classical excerpts in the music. Guest musicians provide sax and percussion, and the sound is complex enough to please most progressive rock fans. The second track is a twelve minute suite which incorporates acoustic and hard rock sections, as well as a fine sax solo from Chachi Ferreyra. The final track 'Hijo Del Relampago' has a harder rock edge that much of what has gone before, and this could be the starting point for the direction that the band took for their second album

First-ever CD reissue of some of the most amazing Turkish music ever recorded: wild, raw and with fuzz guitar all over. Bunalim (which means "depression" or "frustration" in Turkish), founded in 1969, was one of the most well-known underground groups on the Turkish music scene of the early '70s.
Although their discography is limited to only a few singles, Bunalim is regarded as a seminal band in Turkish music history, who paved the way for its members to find fame later on in their careers (playing with Erkin Koray, Mogollar, Ter, Edip Akbayram). Bunalim released 6 singles which are incredibly rare, and never completed a whole album.
They were produced and managed by legendary Turkish rock musician and instigator of the Anatolian rock movement Cem Karaca, one of the most important rock singers in Turkey during the 1970s.
This release is a blend of their work from 1970-1972, and features everything from American-influenced garage to early punk experiments to fuzzed-out psychedelic heavy Eastern drone, including a cover of Iron Butterfly's "Get Out Of My Life, Woman" ("Yeter Artik Kadin") sung in Turkish. They say about the band: "God, they were crazy! Running all nude down the Istiklal Street, psychedelic light shows, crazy paintings all over the stage wall and screaming of LSD! LSD! in their live shows."
As good as the best recordings from Erkin Koray, Bunalim are, even for most Turkish collectors, a well-kept secret. The LP version reissued by Shadoks sold out within a blink of the eye.

Bunalim hail from the same Turkish scene as Erkin Koray -- and the group's founding bassist also played on Koray's classic Elektronik Turkuler -- a record that's quite similar to this one with its mix of Turkish roots, psychedelic roots, and trippy production! And although the group is represented here with material recorded over a 3 year period, with a shifting instrumental lineup -- there's still a core sound that's really unified, with plenty of great Andalusian elements in the mix!

Начнем с «фамилии» группы - названия. Длинная вереница букв разбивается на BALLETTI ROSA DI MACCHIA и, упуская ошибку, переводится примерно как БАЛЕТ В РОЗОВЫХ МАЗКАХ. Пластинка была выпущена в Канаде немецким продюсером в середине 70-х (по другим данным уже в 80-х). Четверо участников были явно не итальянцами, поскольку пели с акцентом, а примечания и тексты изобиловали ошибками. Западные исследователи предполагают, что их имена, всего лишь псевдонимы, а сами музыканты выходцы из Германии, имеющие итальянские корни. Музыкальный материал пластинки - это девять треков прекрасного симфо-прогрессива , классическая линия итальянского рока 70-х в стиле Le Orme, PFM, Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso, куда неплохо вписывается высокий голос Тонино Уччи (бас, флейта, клавиши, акустическая гитара), величественный меллотрон Джанни Мацци и яркая гитара Антонио Сассада. Наиболее интересные треки: Altre Guei Calli (5:29), инструментальная Interludio (2:29) и Se ti Piace (7:17). Раритет на виниле переиздавали японцы и корейцы (вечно впереди планеты всей), причем конверты отпечатали на белом картоне. С компактами дела хуже - только бутлег на Tachika (Япония).

Sympozion (ISR)- Kundabuffer 2005

Comprised of musicians from Israeli rock, prog and jazz bands, Sympozion makes music that the quintet describes as “cool prog.” That’s a fair enough description of a sound that incorporates pleasant jazzy jamband tendencies with two recorders — yes, that plain-looking member of the fipple flute that the least musically talented kid used to play in your elementary-school band. To be fair, though, the recorders in Sympozion are played with great zeal and dexterity, and they become integral to the band’s complex sound, which draws from Gentle Giant, Frank Zappa, Philip Glass, Igor Stravinsky and others. Piano (especially on “Grapefruit”) and dual guitars (both acoustic and electric) are also part of the eclectic mix.

The eight songs on Kundabuffer — the name refers to an organ that, according to the Greek-Armenian mystic G.I. Gurdjieff, restores a cosmic imbalance within the human body — are mostly instrumental, which is wise. The songs that contain vocals (“Bird” and “Zona”) are sung in Hebrew, with the voices of Arik Hayat and Dan Carpman buried in the mix. That said, the guitar solo that marks the finale of “Zona” is one of the album’s highlights. The production quirk with the vocals is surprising, considering that Udi Koomran (Thinking Plague, Present, Guapo) produced Kundabuffer.

One last note about the recorder: Some reports indicate that the instrument, which dates back to medieval times, is more popular than ever. For some reason, though, I don’t think it will catch on in most rock bands. Which gives Sympozion an even greater shot at success by – as the band’s bio states – creating music that doesn’t “repeat anything they have heard before.” Let the buzz begin ...

The album "Armageddon" by the formation PLJ Band is often considered as the most acclaimed Greek progrock music. It was released in ’82 but immediately forbidden because of the blasphemical lyrics and the albums had to be destroyed. Fortunately at about 300 records survived and ended as highly sought after ‘collector items’ (value more than US $ 300,00) in the arms of some very lucky and wealthy progheads many years later! The progressive German label Second Battle re-released "Armageddon" on CD from the original LP because the mastertapes were lost. The musicians: Laurentis Macaeritsas (lead vocals, 12-string guitar and keyboards), Antonis Mijelos (lead guitar, acoustic guitar), Jimmy Vasalakos (bass, backing vocals), Pavlos Kikrilis (rhythm – and classical guitar) and Tolis Skamajouras (drums and percussion). The sound is very unique: a captivating progressive blend of acoustic – and electric folk and (space) rock with a strong psychedelic undertone. The stunning surrealistic cover art is in the vein of Salvador Dali. Perhaps his mind reigns over this album?

The album "Armageddon" is one of the most original progrock albums ever made. The tension between the acoustic – and classical guitars (twanging and rhythm) and the soaring and spacey keyboards on one hand and the fiery and howling, distorted electric guitarplay on the other hand creates a lot of tension and compelling climates, emphasized by the hypnotizing vocals. If you want a psychedelic experience without drugs, this one is yours!


Original LP was banned, only 300 left destruction. Re-released as CD.

Fair Weather - Beginning from an End (1970 - 1993, Repertoire) - блюз-рок из Уэльса, раритет

Perhaps best known today, at least in the States, as a member of Eric Clapton's early-'90s backing band, back in the '60s Andy Fairweather Low was a pop star, Amen Corner's frontman/guitarist. Formed in 1966, that group sent six singles spiralling up the U.K. pop chart, including "(If Paradise Is) Half as Nice," their 1969 number one. Amen Corner closed up shop in 1970, only to immediately reopen as Fair Weather, albeit with a slightly reduced staff -- brass players Mike Smith and Allen Jones had found employment elsewhere. By July, the band's debut single, "Natural Sinner," was taking its evil ways up the chart, reaching number six. Beginning from an End arrived soon after, but before year's end, the band had broken up for good and soon sank from memory. Thus Beginning's reissue on CD was a welcome return, for the set really completed Amen Corner's own story and returned the band to a variation on their early British beat sound -- a solid slab of British rock, albeit one with its R&B roots still proudly displayed. Check out the stomping cover of Stax classic "Don' Mess with Cupid" or the inspired psychedelia-tinged take on "I Hear Your Knocking" for proof. Incidentally, "I Hear You Knocking" was engineered by Dave Edmunds and is obviously the prototype for his own subsequent hit cover. But it's Fairweather Low's own compositions that best capture Fair Weather's transition into the rock age. From the funky "You Ain't No Friend," to the heady blend of proggy-blues on the instrumental "Looking for the Red Label," and across the sliding guitar of the country-flavored "Poor Man's Bum a Run," Fair Weather is stretching R&B into a big stadium sound centered around Fairweather Low and Neil Jones' magnificent guitars, and filled out in a hundred directions by Blue Weaver's phenomenal keyboards. Of course, they weren't the only British band at the time attempting this dramatic transformation from R&B into hard rock, but Fair Weather didn't stick around long enough to disintegrate into thumb-twiddling noodling and 20 minutes of tedious soloing. Still a pop band at heart, Fair Weather accomplished in sharp songs what others took an entire album side to do. And to drive home this point, this reissue appends all three of the band's singles, and A- and B-sides, as bonus tracks. Leviathan – s/t (1974 - 2004, Akarma) - US, hard-prog, light deep-purplesque

Leviathan, a really obscure band, for me... for another time I have to thank Akarma records for its excellent work on many minus-known titles. It is strange thing there are so few reviews on this one shot US band. Thought our PA friends beyond Atlantic ocean were more into Leviathan.
Leviathan...that ancestral monstrum which is told about in ancient legends...Leviathan, the well known monstrum uopon whose characters philosopher Thomas Hobbes build up his description of the STATE's (governement) concept. A horrible monster which has concentrated all the rights of man. The statual government is pure strenght and violence: the Great Leviathan! Men are fighting each other and no one has dues or obligation toward anybody else: HOMO HOMINI LUPUS. Man tries always to dominate other persons and so there is the need of a PACT between them. Every man abandons all his powers and gives them to the State. After the pact is signed, man has no power or right against the State, all is concentrated in it!
Nice cover art, a sea-monster (dragon-shaped) arises from the waters and is going to attack a little ship which is sailing the vast ocean driven by the wind.
How about the music? Well, Leviathan gives us a sort of mix between american peculiar hard rock and very strong mellotron parts. In a similar vein of the first Deep Purple. This characteristics are self evident since the first few seconds of the opener track titled “Arabesque” (6,14 mns): harder and gentler parts alternate each other, always being an important role for the famous keyboard instrument. You will not hear to complecated and elaborated arrangements, but the results is very good art rock, a convincing album from start to finish.

Angela” (6,42 mns) is a mellow song with the predominance of mellotron and acoustic guitar. Some playing children's voices introduce. A soft ballad for a romantic interlude.
Endless Dream” (10,06 mns) is the great opus here. The most interesting for a proglover. Varied arrangements for this darker piece. More important role for bass guitar. The voice of the singer (I think he is Wain Bradley) reminds me of Erik Bloom of Blue Oyster Cult who, in the same period completed their most considerable release of the so-called “black and white period”: Secret Treaties. In fact Leviathan are a sort of mix between Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin (for the vocals of another singer) and Blue Oyster Cult (the most important american rock band of that time). Yeah, Endless Dream is an excellent track.
Seagull” (4,58 mns) is a more conventional hard rock piece. The singer (this time the singer should be Peter Richardson, but none info on the Akarma booklet) is influenced a lot by Robert Plant way of singing...sometimes he seems to be a clone of him!
Angel of Death” (4,12 mns) continues the riff of the previous track and “Always Need You” (3,26 mns) is another romantic short ballad with a remarkable electric guitar.
Quicksilver Clay” (7,26 mns) is the other highlight of the album with a remarkable organ.

All in all, Leviathan unique album is a very good one...the band seemed to be very promising, what a pity the split too soon! I don't know why. My rating: 3.5 stars!
