Revanche ![]() Revanche was the brainchild of Mauro Malavasi. Though not an actual "group", the collective of musicians and singers are due their recognition. This explains the first mystery of why there was no follow up albums. Despite topping the charts with their sole 1979 release. Composer Malavasi, assisted by Rudy Trevisi and producer Jacques Fred Petrus all continued putting out quality disco music after the Revanche project. Trevisi actually having a solo album on Polydor records known simply as Rudy. In the prosperous town of Milan, known for its extraordinary culture and world reknown fashion Jacques worked as a D.J. at different clubs some time after his arrival from his birth place in the French West Indies. In 1974 he started a record store, "Goody Music," to import records from the U.S. to sell in Italy, a new phenomenon at the time and the business did well. In 1975 he met Mauro Malavasi at the conservatory of Bologna (Conservartorio di musica) where Malavasi was teaching. Malavasi had earlier studied choir and orchestral arranging at the conservatory and was a gifted piano player. The duo formed "Goody Music Productions." Jacques also established working relationships with other Italian musicians that became an important part of his staff. The most important and frequently used of them was self-taught bass player David Romani that he met in 1977. Together with Malavasi, Romani had an important role in almost all Petrus projects until 1984. During the late 1970's Jacques opened a publishing company in New York, "Little Macho," that took over "Goody Music." It was used for all publishing duties from 1980 on. The Petrus/Malavasi roles were divided; Petrus was the business side and Malavasi the musical side. Jacques did participate in the studio and had the final decisions on what artist and album material would be released on. But it was Malavasi that did the majority of composing, arranging and conducting. Rudy Trevisi was Malavasi's right hand man. Rudy assisted in arranging as well as playing assorted instruments such as the saxaphone and the electric clavinet. All of this he did for the Revanche project. But it was really Mauro's baby. Besides the aforementioned duties Mauro also played the trumpet, electric clavinet, and synthesizer as well as penning all four tracks. The musicians/singers were hired and flown to the studio in Bologna, Italy (Fonoprint) and did their job but had no idea of how the material was going to be used. They played their small, but important, role within certain directions by Petrus, Malavasi and Trevisi. The musicians/singers had possibilities to change and develope the project though, but only within their own instrumentation/singing and Malavasi and Petrus always had the last word. Later the musicians/singers would hear their contributions when the songs hit the dance floors on different albums. For the Revanche release Petrus and Malavasi used their Italian musicians (i.e the Goody Music Orchestra and the Goody Music String Ensemble). But for the vocals they opted for the cream of the New York studio singers. Christine Wiltshire led the group. Her credits included disco albums by Herbie Mann and Eddie Kendricks. Plus she was featured on the Musique and Candido albums. Jocelyn Shaw who's credits included Machine, Joel Diamond, LaSo, Gloria Gaynor and Herbie Mann releases. Shaw would also lend her voice to Petrus' Change projects later. Yvonne Lewis, who by far has had the most prolific session career, beginning in 1972 with her longtime association with Roberta Flack. And rounding out the vocal duties were Motown contract singers Bobby Douglas, Steve Daniels, Skipp Ingam and Robin Corley. Douglas, Corley and Daniels would surface later that year as the Motown act Platinum Hook. The Atlantic Records album, "Music Man" was an instant hit in the summer of 1979. As with most of the Malavasi-Petrus productions it only contained four tracks. The title track was coupled with "You Get High In N.Y.C." for a 12" release. As typical of their work it's a high energy thriller from start to finish. It could have been labeled as a Macho or Peter Jacques Band album and would have worked. The other two tracks, "Revenge" and "1979 It's Dancing Time" also clock in just over 8 minutes and prove that quality always wins over quantity. As things go it would be the only release under the Revanche moniker. After reaching the top the only place you can go is down. That's exactly what happened to the Petrus/Malavasi team after their tremendous success. In the 1983-1984 season their working relationship started to become seriously unbalanced because Petrus did not pay Malavasi or Romani. Or anybody else for that matter, so they (Malavasi & Romani) finally left in 1984. They headed back to Italy where they started their own studio together. Playing and later producing several Italian artists. One of their first projects was Stadio with their album "La Faccia Delle Donna" for RCA Records in 1984. Malavasi later commented that he missed Italy, and that combined with his uncomfortable life and economic situation, made him leave the U.S. For Petrus by 1986 his glory days were reaching an end as a producer and, unfortunately, as a human being. The circumstances surrounding his death are very mysterious. All trustworthy sources give the same basic explanations to his death. Swedens music guru Mats Nilesker has publicly stated that "Jacques was a leading figure and heavily involved in organized crime. He was laundering a lot of dirty money into the music business to give the mafia legitimacy." David Romani claims in an interview that "he was murdered at his home in Guadeloupe by an unknown assasin, his body riddled with eight bullets sometime in 1986." He also said that "the murder presumably was connected with the illegal affairs Petrus was involved in." Engineer Michael Brauer has said that "he was killed in his homeland of Guadaloupe. Some people hated him so much, that they went to Guadaloupe to make sure he was dead." Despite his tragic end and the disolution of their partnership we still are grateful for the magic Malavasi and Petrus created.
