People Like Us

People Like Us were a South-African Hi-NRG band from the mid 1980's who had success with their song 'Deliverance'.

Producers Paul Crossley and Terry Owen were working with another South-African group Shiraz and were looking for a female voice for their new project. They were contacted by Giuseppe 'Peps' Cotummuccio a musician who was part of the group Syndicate. The singer of Peps's group was UK born Cindy Dickenson, she would become the voice and face of People Like Us. The first song conceived was 'Midnight Lover' under the watchful eye of legendary music executive Hilton Rosenthal who would later produce records like 'Graceland' for Paul Simon and who was also the manager for South-African outfit 'Jaluka' and 'Savuka'. 'Midnight Lover' received a mild response on the club scene.

Then in 1987 their song 'Deliverance' were released. This would be the song to make then well known in the clubs of Europe where HI-NRG and Italo disco songs were still the favourite music styles pumping out of the speakers as apposed to the infiltrating of House style music. People didn't at first know that 'People Like Us' were a South-African outfit and expected them to be from Europe. The song 'Deliverance' caused quite a stir under some church leaders in pre-democratic ultra conservative South-Africa due to the songs lyrical content. The debut album was released simply titled 'People Like Us' and featured further tracks including 'Hiroshima' and 'Reincarnation (Coming back for love)'etc. Then disaster struck when at the height of their popularity Paul Crossley died of a possible AIDS related illness[citation needed]. Subsequently the Shiraz song 'Fighting For Our Lives' were covered by 'People Like Us' bringing homage to Crossley. This had serious repercussions as Crossley was the main driving force of the band and his death doomed future progression of the band.

Later on Angie Gold was involved on several of following album's songs including "Resurrection" under supervision of Terry Owen and Robin Hogarth. Robin Hogarth would go on to win two Grammy Awards for his producing work on albums in 2007 and 2008. The later work of People Like Us could not live up to the success of 'Deliverance' and it all parties involved moved on to other projects and People Like Us disappeared into oblivion.

Cindy Dickenson is currently living in Durban, South-Africa where her husband is the radio DJ Dave Guselli on East Coast Radio. She is still involved with music and does perform on a regular basis but the type of music she is currently comfortable with is a more folk and rock sounding style.
